Lusitanos go top, Devils and Delta play out a classic

Lusitanos are now top of the Rugby Europe Super Cup standings with 10 points from 10 after their latest win while there was also a weekend victory for Delta.

On October 17, Lusitanos from Portugal started their campaign in the five-team even with a comprehensive 74-12 bonus point win away at the Bohemia Rugby Warriors.

And they backed that up on Saturday in their second outing, defeating previously unbeaten Romanian Wolves 77-5 with a bonus point to show they are the team to beat.

In Caldas da Rainha, Lusitanos built up a 35-0 lead and never looked back.

The try scorers in that first 40 minutes for the home side were winger Rodrigo Marques, scrum-half Martim Dias, full-back Tomas Batista and winger Manuel Cardoso Pinto with two. Stand-off Hugo Aubry converted all five of them.

Two minutes into the second half, Lusitanos scored try number six via loosehead prop Pedro Vicente and when it was converted by the on-form Aubry it was 42-0.

Two minutes into the second half, Lusitanos scored try number six via loosehead prop Pedro Vicente and when it was converted by the on-form Aubry it was 42-0.

Their remaining five tries - to make it 11 on the day for Lusitanos - all came from subs.

Jordan Bacon, Francisco Almeida, Tomas Amado (2) and Nuno Mascarenhas were the scorers while Aubry converted them all for a 100 percent record.

The sole Wolves unconverted try came from centre Sivaniolo Lumelume.

The loss now has the Wolves sitting third in the standings while Delta from the Netherlands are second after a 31-27 victory away at fourth placed Brussels Devils.

At the Sportcomplex Sint-Gillis in Dendermonde in Belgium, a try by No.8 Maurice Fromont converted by full-back Mattheo Van Holsbeke put the hosts 7-0 up early on.

Delta levelled things up via a try from loosehead prop Wytze Molenkamp converted by stand-off Hein Thielen before the Devils retook the lead.

The Devils second converted try came from Fromont again and then Molenkamp was yellow carded for Delta just before half-time.

Early in the second half, Delta made it 14-14 when 14-man Delta’s second try came from back-row Mart Van Der Veen and Thielen converted.

There was then a flurry of cards, Van Der Veen being red carded for Delta and centre Twan Stevens and sub Toine Van Den Bos being yellowed for the same team.

Flor Van Den Bussche, the Devils back-rower, then followed and heading into the final 20 minutes it was 14 versus 12.

Just after coming back to 13 men, Delta scored a try through back-row Jack Slob and when sub Lucas Overtoom converted they were 21-14 up.

This crazy game was far from done though and an unconverted try from centre Eliott Delsipee and then a penalty from Van Holsbeke had the Devils 22-21 up with 12 minutes to go.

The hosts then went 27-21 ahead thanks to a five-pointer from sub Felix Rifon before Delta stunned them with 10 late points.

They came from a try by No.8 Joris Smits and then a conversion and a penalty by Overtoom.

This competition now takes a break until December 5.
