Romania Wolves remain unbeaten, Lusitanos start off with a win

The Romanian Wolves have now won two games from two in the Rugby Europe Super Cup while Lusitanos entered the competition with a bang at the weekend

In week two of action in the five-team event, the Wolves backed up their opening victory over Brussels Devils with one over Delta while Lusitanos thumped the Bohemia Rugby Warriors 74-12.

At the National Rugby Center in Amsterdam on Saturday, Delta from the Netherlands pushed their visitors from Romania close before losing out 32-23.

After a cagey start, Delta took the lead in this game in the 18th minute when centre Twan Stevens scored a try which was converted by stand-off Hein Thielen.

By the 33rd minute the Wolves were 15-7 up, stand-off Ioan-Stefan Cojocariu kicking a penalty, a conversion and scoring a try and winger Tharquinn Thane scoring a try too.

Thielen then kicked two penalties to make it 15-13 at the interval and very much ‘game on’.

The Wolves came flying out at the start of the second half and scored their third try in the 42nd minute, No.8 Degei Samisoni going over and Cojocariu converting to make it 22-13.

Thane’s second try, converted by Cojocariu, then stretched their lead to 29-13 after 55 minutes.

With 17 minutes remaining, Delta gave themselves slight hope with a try via No.8 Mike Hansen converted by sub Lucas Overtoom.

Then, in the 74th minute, Overtoom’s penalty made it 29-23 and they were chasing a win and, at worse, a losing bonus point, but the Wolves scuppered both those options thanks to a late penalty by Cojocariu as they got over the line 32-23.

They are at the summit with eight points while Lusitanos from Portugal are second on five points after their bonus point win away at the Warriors earlier that same day.

At the Rugby Aréna Tatra Smíchov in Prague, the home side from Czechia had no answer to what Lusitanos threw at them.

The Warriors did though take an early 5-0 advantage when centre Jindrich Kulhavy scored a try.

Winger Maxim Aschenbrenner also scored later in the half and stand-off Jan Fojtik converted, but, Lusitanos, who also suffered a yellow card in that period, scored five tries in that half to lead 29-12 at the interval.

Forty-five more points then came for the rampant visitors in the second half and, in total during the match, they ran in 12 tries.

Those tries came from centre Tomas Appleton, winger Jordan Bacon, tighthead prop Antonio Prim, back-row David Wallis, scrum-half Tomas Amado (2), sub Pedro Vicente (2), stand-off Domingos Cabral, winger Martim Faro, sub Guilherme Costa and sub Martim Dias. Full-back Tomas Batista kicked seven conversions.

This coming Saturday there are two matches in round three and these are Lusitanos versus the Wolves in a clash of unbeaten sides and fourth placed Brussels taking on fourth placed Delta.
