The 7s Rugby Europe season is less than one month away from kick-off, and the beautiful coastal city of Makarska will be the first stage for the Championship series.
Set in the Adriatic Sea, Makarska's history starts all the way back to the pre-historic age and has become one of the most desired destines for leisure and relaxation in Europe.
But what are the reasons for a rugby fan to come to Makarska? Let us give you five!
- Croatia is fast becoming one of the most talented teams in the European rugby community, having successfully won promotion to the Trophy division in 2022, and contested for a top-3 spot in the 2022/2023 season, with Makarska becoming one of the host cities for the Men’s national team.
- The Makarska Riviera Ragbi Klub was one of the first clubs in the country, founded in 1968 and becoming the backbone of the sport in Croatia. In the 1990s, Makarska helped to create a golden era for Croatian rugby, hosting a Rugby World Cup qualifier match against Italy, won by the visitors. The current Croatia Men’s XV head coach, Anthony Poša, played in that fixture, in one of the most memorable Test Matches of Croatian rugby.

Women's Schedule - Makarska has been selected as the European city of sports for 2024, thanks to a vibrant combination of the young generations, a lively town, and a plurality of sports that anyone can enjoy, play, and be part of.

Be it from Dubrovnik or Split, you can reach those cities by plane and then find a train, car, or ferry to get to your final destination. The Croatian roads are easy to manage, but the train system runs on time and it will allow you to have a more relaxed trip to have fun in the 7s series!
In 2023, France was crowed champions of the Women’s Championship Series, with Anne-Cecile Ciofani finishing as the top try scorer (fifteen tries), followed by Belgium’s Cécile Blondiau and Czech’s Anezka-Marta Sladkova.
As for the Men's competition, Ireland finished on top but there was a tie for the king of the try scorers as Georgia’s Giorgi Jobava and Germay’s Jakob Dipper finished with thirteen tries each.
The first leg of the 7s Championship Series starts on the 7th of June, and Makaraska awaits all Rugby Europe fans to come and be part of another promising 7s season!
