Türkiye girls and Ukraine and Monaco boys taste under-18 sevens success

Three Rugby Europe under-18 Trophy Sevens events took place over the weekend and there was some great action in Budapest in Hungary.

In the girls under-18 Trophy, eight teams were involved and, in the pool stage, Türkiye and Romania set the pace with three wins from three apiece in their four-team sections.

In the semi-finals, Romania impressed even more with a 36-0 win over Sweden while Türkiye were pushed all the way by Ukraine before getting through the tie 12-7.

Romania had been scoring quite freely up to that point, but in the final the Türkiye defence was on top form and that allowed them to come through 15-0 and be crowned champions.

Ukraine were third, Sweden were fourth, Andorra were fifth, Lithuania were sixth, Hungary were seventh and Moldova were eighth.

In the boys under-18 Trophy 1 event, once again there were eight teams involved and two pools of four to get things going.

After that phase it was Ukraine and Türkiye who had won three from three and the latter then got through their semi-final quite comfortably by seeing off Sweden 28-7.

Ukraine were involved in a much tighter last four tie, but they eventually got past Israel 12-5.

And Ukraine clearly took heart from getting through that one because, in the final they defeated Türkiye 22-7.

Israel edged past Sweden to take third place with the Swedes fourth, Croatia fifth, Moldova sixth, Andorra seventh and Bulgaria eighth.

Finally, in the boys under-18 Trophy 2 event, five teams were involved.

That meant that, in the first stage, they all played four matches in one big pool and Monaco won four out of four to top things.

Austria won three games, Hungary one, Serbia one and Bosnia and Herzegovina one.

Then one played two and three played four to confirm final placings and, in the match for top spot, Monaco got the better of Austria 22-0 with defence to the fore and often helping the victors win the ball back.

In the third/fourth match, Hungary beat Serbia 18-5 to give the home support something to cheer.
