With the Men’s Rugby Europe Championship finals approaching at full pace, fans will have the chance to watch some of Rugby Europe’s finest players going at it for the last time.
With Madrid hosting what is going to be a cracking Sunday, we picked four 1-v-1 player clashes that we are most looking forward to witnessing!
Rodrigo Marta vs Demur Tapladze
As Portugal and Georgia will be locked in the Championship fight, Rodrigo Marta and Demur Tapladze will be key protagonists for each of their team’s goals and dreams.
Totalling 11 tries between them, both centres are heading for a proper clash that might determine the competition’s future. So, who holds, if any, advantage before the game kicks off?
Marta has scored seven tries, nailing down at least one finish per game, making the best of his nine clean breaks and 22 defenders beaten (the player with the most in 2026). To put it in simple terms: when Marta gets the ball, something special happens for Portugal. The US Colomiers backline unit is an all-out threat that can reduce any defence to cinders.
As for Tapladze, his progress to become Georgia’s prime outside centre has been astonishing, having finessed his game to the point that he has become an invaluable asset for the Lelos. The Black Lion operator has already landed four finishes in 2026, showcasing several top-notch stats from six clean breaks, twelve line breaks and 180 carrying metres.
But, the question remains to be answered… who of the two steps into the final with any advantage? Possibly Marta, but the line that differentiates the two is extremely thin, and a definitive answer can only be given after Sunday.

Estanislao Bay vs Alin Conache
A proper battle of the scrum halves! The electrifying dynamo Estanislao Bay versus the ice-cold master tactician Alin Conache, who will come out on top?
Blessed with top-level pace and speed, Tani Bay’s unpredictability can unlock the most resilient of defences, twisting and puppeteering the opposition’s players to his whim. His knack for twisting and entangling the opposition to create a critical try opportunity for Spain has been key to the promising rise of the Los Leones over the past two seasons.
As for Conache, the combination of his kicking prowess and tactical awareness has helped Romania in some tight encounters, solving problems on the spot. So far, the Romanian half-back has converted 35 points from the tee, playing a critical role in helping the Stejarii recover in time to qualify for the semifinals after losing their competition’s opener against Germany.
With Spain and Romania bound to square off for the bronze medal, which of the two will have the last say?

Charles-Henri Berguet vs Samuel Sjoberg
A proper prop arm-wrestling, that’s what you can expect from the clash between Belgium’s Charles-Henri Berguet and Switzerland’s Samuel Sjoberg.
Two of the competition’s top front-rowers are going to be looking into each other’s eyes at every scrum and lineout, and whoever has the most heart will have edged their team closer to victory.
Berguet has forced the opposing tighthead props to concede several penalties since the competition began, showcasing a truly outstanding scrummaging prowess that has helped Belgium win a couple of games. At the same time, the RC Vannes loosehead prop is Belgium’s prime ball carrier, having run to the contact 27 times, winning the gain line 70% of the time.
As for Samuel Sjoberg, the tighthead has ascended to become one of Switzerland’s greatest servants, with his 51 successful tackle attempts serving as an example of his quality.
But can he scrummage? Yes, yes, he can, and what’s most enticing is his progress in the last two years. Sjoberg’s ability to withstand the impact from the opposition’s loosehead was remarkable, especially against Germany, the Netherlands, and Germany, denying his rivals any advantage.
With one game to go in the campaign, which one of the two will rise to the occasion? That remains to be seen, as both have the sheer quality and determination to be an ace-in-the-hole come Sunday.

Vikas Meijer vs Leo Wolf
Ready for an enticing game of chess between two of the most exciting fly halves of the Rugby Europe world?
The Netherlands Vikas Meijer and Germany’s Leo Wolf are destined to clash next Sunday, and will play a crucial role in the outcome of what is going to be a tense affair.
Wolf’s performance against Romania will always be remembered for how astonishing it was, as the 24-year-old utility back made every opportunity pay off, be it from the tee, setting up, and scoring tries. The nº10's vision and physicality have been colossal for Germany in 2026, with him being his side’s main ball runner, scoring 20 points and making 150 metres.
Regarding Vikas Meijer, he is the Netherlands' bread and butter. Without the fly-half, they lose their ability to create something extraordinary when the ball falls into their lap. The young Dutch maestro knows how to run the show like few, and even if this year’s Men’s Rugby Europe Championship campaign has been far from what they had envisioned, Meijer has been a shining light for his side.
So, what can we expect from this clash? While both have different playing styles, Meijer has shown he can be the difference between winning and losing, as seen over the last two years.
