OCTAVIAN MORARIU re-elected as Rugby Europe President

As the sole candidate running, the current President and IOC Member, Mr Octavian Morariu, has been unanimously re-elected by the General Assembly for a new 4-year term until December 2020

The 97th Rugby Europe General Assembly meeting took place on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th of December at Société Générale Headquarters in Paris, gathering the 47 unions members’ representatives.

The major point of the agenda was the election of Rugby Europe governance members. Further to modifications of by-laws adopted during Rugby Europe Congress in June 2016 (in Tbilisi), the new structure is composed of a President and 16 Members of Board of Directors (including positions of Treasurer, General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary co-opted by the Board).

As the sole candidate running, the current President and IOC Member, Mr Octavian Morariu, has been unanimously re-elected by the General Assembly for a new 4-year term until December 2020 covering the next Rugby World Cup 2019 and Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.

He declared: “I am honoured to be supported by all of you and I am proud to represent the European Rugby Family. I hope the coming years will confirm the emerging hopes that were seeded these recent years. He also thanked M. Jean-Claude Baqué, the former FIRA president for the work done and his permanent support.”

For the other elections, among the 22 candidates who applied for a position in Rugby Europe Board of Directors, hereafter are the 16 elected members and positions: 

Vice-Presidents:

  • Madeleine Lathi (Sweden)
  • Fabien Pelous (France)

General Secretary: Gilbert Celli (San Marino)

The General Assembly Meeting was also marked by the retirement/termination of historical members of FIRA and RUGBY EUROPE, such as Jean-Louis BARTHES (previous General Secretary), José-Maria EPALZA (latest Treasurer) and Executive Committee members (Pierre CAMOU (France), Martin DAVIES (Wales), Raul MARTINS (Portugal), Tullio ROSOLEN (Italy) who were warmly thanked for their commitment and support in Rugby Europe history.
