FRANCE U18 Sevens 2018 European Champion

France gets European title and qualification for Youth Olympic Games 2018

 

The annual Men's U18 Sevens European Championship took place this week-end in Panevezys (Lithuania) with a previous sesame for the winner - a ticket for Youth Olympic Games 2018 to be held in Buenos Aires next October. 

16 teams competed in Lithuania for the competition : Ireland (Title-holder), France (Runner-up), Team GB (representing England and Wales unions) and 13 other ambitious unions. 

Played under warm and sunny weather, pools' games did not unveil any surprise - all top seeds teams defended their positions to step forward Quarter-Finals. The eight expected teams started the second part of the tournament on Sunday aiming to keep on the race as long as possible. 

The first victim was Great Britain who suffered the collective talent of Germany (10-21). Portugal did not overcome the Irish challenge - while France cooly defeated Georgia (42-0) and Spain defeated Italy.

In semifinals, France and Ireland kept the pace giving any chance to their opponents to qualify for the revenge of last tournament. 

After a long cautious start of both team, Ireland found the gap to score - but France replied immediately thanks to a long run of Joachim Trouabal (7-7). 

The second half was very opened with 5 tries scored. France took the lead despite an immediate try from Ireland. Nevermind, they attacked again and scored twice in 2 minutes to widen the gap and keep the advantage (26-12). A last try from green players did not change the result. 

France is 2018 European title and has grabed the ticket for YOG 2018 in Buenos Aires. 

In the second part of the competition - Poland performed and beated Russia in Challenge Trophy Final.  

Ukraine and Sweden promoted from Trophy division battled to secure their place in Championship until the last game. In a decisive match, Sweden dominated its opponent (26-7).
